Free build terms

What entering an idea means, in plain words. Last changed 15 October 2026.

What the free build is

Each round, I (Kaz) pick one idea sent to me and build it for free. It is a standalone build: a new product, tool or app that works on its own. It is not a way to have a business’s internal systems fixed for free; that is paid work, and you are welcome to talk to me about it.

Your idea stays yours

Entering gives me no ownership of your idea, and no right to build it for anyone else or sell it. The free build exists to make things for the people who think of them, not to collect ideas.

What you agree to by entering

  • I can talk about your project freely. That includes naming it, describing it and showing it on this website, on social media, in my guides and in posts about the build, whether or not it is picked. Please don’t send anything you need kept confidential.
  • I can name you as the person who sent it, by your first name and company if you gave one, when I talk about the shortlist or the build. Tell me when you enter if you’d rather I didn’t.
  • The details you send are yours to stand behind. Don’t send anything that belongs to someone else, or that you’re not free to share.

How an idea is picked

I choose, and my choice is final. I pick the idea where a build makes the biggest difference and that I can do properly. I don’t have to pick any idea in a round, and I may contact entrants with questions before choosing. Shortlisted entrants get a free call.

The build

  • We agree the scope together before I start. I build to that scope, and I can stop or narrow it if it changes.
  • A round runs in phases, not to dates. I’ll keep you told where it is, but nothing here promises a delivery date.
  • I build in public: the decisions, the progress and the result are shared as they happen.

What you get, and what I keep

  • The code and documentation I write for your build, handed over at the end, yours to use and change.
  • I keep the right to show the build and describe how it was made, and to reuse my own tools, methods and general know-how in other work.

What isn’t promised

The build is free, and it is given as it is: no warranty, and no support, hosting or maintenance after handover unless we agree otherwise. As far as the law allows, I’m not liable for any loss that comes from using it.

Your details

What you send is kept as the privacy notice says. Entering again in the same round replaces your earlier entry.
